Monthly Metal Review

Nickel and Cobalt (March 2018)

In London, Nickel decreased to US$ 6.01 per lb, while cobalt min. 99.3% increased to US$ 42.5 per lb this month. Toronto-based RNC said it will concentrate on its Dumont nickel-cobalt development project in eastern Cana-da and declare its Beta Hunt nickel-gold mine in Western Australia a non-core asset. It said Dumont, in Quebec’s Abitibi region, is the world’s second largest nickel reserve and eighth largest cobalt reserve. The world’s largest carmaker, Volkswagen, said it secured enough cobalt for a rollout of all-electric vehicles. VW said it obtained 20 billion euros (US$25 billion) in lithi-um-ion battery supplies. VW is to equip 16 factories to pro-duce EVs by 2023, against three currently. It plans to build up to 3 million yearly by 2025. But luxury carmaker BMW said it will postpone find-ing supply contracts for cobalt and lithium until at least 2020, when mass produced electric vehicles prove profita-ble. BMW believes its needs for car-battery raw materials will grow 10-fold by 2025, when it plans to offer 25 electri-fied vehicles, probably using nickel-magnesium-cobalt batteries. China signed a huge deal to secure the lion’s share of global cobalt supply. The deal will see GEM, a US$4.6-billion company on the Shenzhen stock exchange, buy 50,000 tonnes of cobalt from a Swiss mining company [Glencore] over the next three years. The Financial Times said that’s equal to half the world’s cobalt supply in 2017. The deal locks in China’s position as a market leader in manufacturing of electric-car batteries globally, as it al-ready produces more than 80 percent of the world’s re-fined cobalt. GEM said increasing demand meant use of recycled cobalt metal in battery production was no longer adequate. The company is the main cobalt supplier to Chinese battery maker CAML, which said it’s now the largest battery supplier. GEM will receive 13,800 tonnes in year one; increasing to 21,000 in 2020. LME Nickel stocks decreased from 335’508.00 to 320’586.00 tonnes in March.
