Copper (December 2017)

In London, Copper prices increased 6.28 % to US$ 7,157.00 a tonne with a contango of US$ 35.00 this month. In London, copper rose after data showing an early-December jump in China’s copper imports fuelled expectations of stronger demand from the top consumer. But gains were capped by a rising dollar. China's Novem-ber unwrought-copper imports of 470,000 tonnes were up more than 40 percent on-month. China's refined-copper production jumped by nearly 10 percent on-year in November to 786,000 tonnes, the highest rate in three years as smelters made the most of higher copper prices. Production was up by 6.8 percent January-November. China CSPT led by Tongling Non Ferrous has agreed in the last days of December with Freeport to fix the 2018 annual treatment charges for copper concen-trates at 82,50 USD per ton and 8,25 US cents per pound of copper . Rio Tinto said it wants a 2018 output of 510,000-610,000 tonnes of mined copper. Rio expects to gener-ate 460,000-480,000 tonnes of mined copper in2017, cut by over 20 percent from the 525,000-665,000 tonnes projected in late 2016. The first six months of 2017 were tough as a shareholder of the Es-condida mine in Chile. Its shared output from Escondida dropped by 39 percent after a 44-day worker strike. Rio would face further target drops. The Federal Court of Canada rejected Taseko Mines’ proposed US$1.5-billion open-pit New Prosperity copper-gold project in British Columbia. The high-court ruling was a victory for the Tsilhqot’in First Nation, which said the project would infringe on aboriginal title and de-stroy a sacred body of water. The Pebble copper-gold mine proposed for the Bristol Bay watershed in southwest Alaska was a non-starter under U.S. President Barrack Obama, backed by the Clean Water Act. Officials said toxic residue could harm the world’s largest sockeye-salmon population and endanger 14,000 jobs and US$252 million-generated by the Bristol Bay fishing industry. But with Donald Trump as President, Pebble is back. In late December, a Northern Dynasty Minerals subsidiary filed for a wetlands-fill permit. Pebble faces opposition from environmentalists, indige-nous communities and salmon-industry defenders, but has powerful friends in Washington. LME copper stocks increased to 201’725.00 tonnes in December.
